SupperXpress, a service coming to Eusoff Hall in July, will offer local favourites such as Hock Kian Mee and Pepper Beef Rice. The website will be launched on 1st July. It will be interesting to see what kind of demand one hall will have. I'm sure the service will expand to serve other halls if there is a demand.

Nicest Shark Fin's Soup in Singapore?

Some of you may be opposed to eating shark fins... I don't really care one way or the other. But in my opinion the nicest shark fins can be found at Lei Garden Restaurant. The flavour is really from the chicken soup rather than the fins. I like the cheaper $68 (sometmes $58 offer) version which could possibly serve 3 persons rather than the "bacon" double-boiled version at $48 per person.

And since we are talking about Lei Garden. I do like the food there, although I found the Abalone dishes not consistent. Eg. I had it once and loved it, and subsequently, I tried another time and was disappointed. And at the "high-end" price-point, I won't be trying any more abalone from Lei Garden for a while.

Bottle Tree Park

Went to lunch at the Bottle Tree Park located at Yishun. The so called restaurant is situated in a man-made park with a pond which you can engage yourself with fishing - if that is your thing (for a price).

I must say the environment is quite interesting, the landscaping is quite calming. I even saw Durian Trees with baby fruit. Of course, there are Bottle Trees planted here and there.

The food was not that great. I wouldnt return for food that, but it's worth a visit just to look at the landscaping

Anyone out there want good quality Bird's Nest at a good price? I'm doing a poll to see if there is sufficient demand to import Bird's Nest for consumers in Singapore!

I noticed there are quite a few companies in Malaysia that farm bird's nest using houses. There are also some that are harvested from caves.

More Abalone Noodle

Just when I thought I found the only Abalone noodle store, I come across another. This time in a "Kopitiam" coffee shop located at Rochor Center. The store sells the noodle in $3 and $4 variety. I must say it is far cheaper than the Eu Tong Seng coffee shop's $8 version. The Ablone slices were also very generous and tasty. The noodle tasted like regular Bak Chor Mee type noodle - with the added abalone.

Bottomline, it is value for money, but the Eu Tong Seng variety has better tasting noodle but at a premium.

High-end seafood hits everyday coffee shop noodle style? Thats right. There is a Kopitiam in Chinatown along Eu Tong Seng road, called Jia Xiang which sells their chinese noodles along with bbq pork (char siew) and Abalone! Yes.. Abalone. The Abalone option adds $2 to the cost of the $6 bowl of noodle, making the noodle one of the more expensive variety. The added Abalone is just 2 small pieces of Abalone, but they are reasonably tasty. The noodle itself is flavoured with a very fragrant vinegar, making the meal very tasty.

This evening, I ventured to the all well-known restaurant called Cafe Amigo. They used to hide in a tiny little place near the shopping center that housed John Little. They have since relocated to the famous "Funan the IT mall".

The sitting arrangements looked much better than the old place - i.e. more spacious. The setting does not show off it's "high-end" ambience. However, the price of food there is "high-end" prices in my opinion - considering the portions and prices that are charged for simple chicken or pork.

The Oysters weren't all that memorable compared to the past but I contribute to my taste-buds watermark may have gone up. No one can do Oysters as good as the old "Streeters" (now defunc'ed) restaurant at Keong Siak road.

The jazz band did started to play as I was leaving, and from the little I heard them play, I think the music does add more to the ambience, and perhaps if the meal was done at a later time, the mood of dinning there may be enhanced.

This tiny little shop is hiddeen behind the Chinatown food street's stalls. Their specialty is Chinese dumplings and handmade "la mein" (noodles).

I was there just for a simple meal. Had a chick-chop la mein, a drink and eight pieces of steamed pork dumplings. All this for S$11.80.

I came across this "coffee" shop that sells Claypot Rice. The name is called "Tong Chiang Claypot". It's located at Geylang Lor 3. Parking is available at the multistorey carpark, and Tong Chiang is just located at the main road.

Taste Paradise on Mosque Street

Taste Paradise serves fusion cuisine, and is supposedly known for its sharksfin soup. After a trip down there, I'd also say it's a little on the pricey side, but still worth it!

Try the foie gras and the scallop. Foie gras was a huge chunk of serving, slightly fried, and so smooth and tasty. It didn't melt in my mouth so quickly, but good enough. The scallop too, was large, fresh, and somehow the way it was cooked retained its flavour and texture. It was the most delicious scallop I've had in a long long time.

The sharksfin I had wasn't the top grade one, but it was still good. It comes in a rather creamy soup which isn't starchy like elsewhere, with relatively small shreds of sharksfin in it. Small as compared to those from Thai Sharksfin Village, which serves large slabs of sharksfin.

Overall, the food lives up to the restaurant's name. You will find you don't need any garnishing or spices like chilli. I'm a chilli queen and I tried the chilli there, which is good, but I found myself relishing the dishes without any urge to reach for more seasonings. The taste is always just right!

I'll give it 4 out of 5 stars.

However, they serve absolutely no Japanese beer. So bewarned!

Price hike in Singapore?

I was just at Great World City's Cold Storage today at about 3pm. I was trying to buy some salad to eat at home so I could be have a more healthy diet. To my surprise, The alfalfa price was raised from the old S$2.50 to S2.80. Thats a hefty 12% increase.

Not sure what other products are now hyped up in prices, I certainly hope Cold Storage will be more reasonable in their pricing, admittedly they have one of the better selections of products than anywhere else and command a premium.

Receipe for Chinese Beef Stirfry

Ingredients (Serves 3-4):

- 0.8 - 1 lb beef flank steak (cut across the grain into thin slices)
- 3 slices ginger (Can put more if you like)
- 2 cloves garlic, sliced
- 3 stalks spring onion, cut into 1.5″ lengths, diagonally (they look nicer when cut diagonally)
- 1 tsp oyster sauce and soy sauce
- 1/2 cup corn starch solution (made from 1/2 tsp corn starch dissolved in cool water)

Seasoning for beef:
- 1/2 tsp salt (not so much salt here because you are going to add oyster sauce during the stir fry process)
- a few dashes white pepper
- 1/2 tsp corn starch (this gives a smoother texture to the beef, helps thickens the sauce as well)
- 2 tsp Chinese cooking wine (optional)

Cooking Method:

1. Mix beef with seasoning ingredients. Set aside for 15-30 mins.

2. Heat up 2 tbsp vegetable oil in wok. Medium heat. When oil is hot enough, add sliced ginger and garlic and stir fry until lightly browned and fragrant.

3. Add beef to wok and stir fry well until color of beef changes. Add spring onions and oyster sauce and soy sauce. Mix well.

4. Add corn starch solution a little at a time until desired gravy thickness.

5. Serve with plain white rice.

Greetings ladies and gentlemen, this is part ][ of my review of Brussels Sprouts restaurant. After a disappointing last visit - due to the expensive and not so good starters(including the mussels).

This time I decided to order the "Main Course" size of the mussels. Although I picked the Thai flavour this time, I did notice the mussels were larger and much more edible that the starter size counterparts. The sauce was also very yummy! Two thumbs up this time round!

Conclusion: Avoid all forms of starters including mussels!

Restaurant : Brussels Sprouts

Located at 80 Mohamad Sultant Road this little restaurant sparks a restaurant/bar setting. With "Tin Tin comic characters" as the silhouette on the wall and hanging "light bulbs" to spot a modern look and feel.

14 different styles of mussels to satisfy mussels lovers. Starters size starts at S$18.
Lots of Belgium beer for the beer drinkers with alcohol content as low as 0.5%.

Their main courses are a little pricey considering the serving portion and the casual setting of the restaurant. Serving timing of the courses to a party of two needs improvement. Plating needs to be heated to keep courses hot - they cool down too quickly. The french fries were good!
S$18 Shrimps for starters - as you can see for yourself in the photo above, the portion is really tiny. Typical type food tastes better from other japanese restaurant. Give this one a miss!

Nadezhda : Russian Restaurant in Singapore

What is Russian Cuisine? In Singapore, We never thought there would be specialized profileration of such a cuisine. The "Shashlik Restauant" has been in Singapore for decades (winning us over with their awesome Borsch soup)! But as the population of russians in Singapore increases, there seem to be a need for more authentic taste of Russia.

Nadezhda (translated to "Hope") is a restaurant that is located in the outskirts of Kampong Glam at 140 Arab Street that hopefully will satisfy the Russian's taste buds as well as the locals.
